Hanging by a Thread

Okay. Hanging by a carabiner, not a thread. This is a “how-to secure articles in your van or RV,” or even your car blog post. Part of the problem with living in a vehicle is securing things so they don’t go crashing to the floor or off of shelves or walls when you start, stop or turn a corner. It took me a long time to find the “perfect” solution, but here it is. D-rings used to hang picture frames come in a variety of sizes to hold a variety of weights. The big rings hold 25 to 50 pounds! More than I need, but good and strong. They also FOLD FLAT when not in use. That means I can move around the van, and not get stuck, poked or stabbed by a hook. They lay flat on the floor so I can set things on top of them when I’m not using them as anchors. BEST OF ALL, a small carabiner will hook through them (carabiners available at Home Depot and Lowes and most Wal-Marts and dollar stores for about 99 cents) for extra security and ease. The D-rings come in packs, and are kind of pricey, about $3.99 for 3-4 rings. But they’re so worth it!

Best buy is at Amazon.com. You can get 50-heavy duty rings for $11.99.

I hang my backpack, zippered bags with tools, first aid kit, make-up and shower stuff from the hooks. Or, I run my bungie cord hooks to the small D-rings to help keep stuff secured. They install with a screwdriver and one or two screws depending on the size. Lightweight, pretty easy to install with a little elbow grease, and incredibly adaptable!
